A life sentence has been handed to Rodney Witbooi for the premeditated murder of his ex-wife. Along with the life sentence, there were additional sentences totalling 37 years and three months for attempted rape, attempted murder, housebreaking, and illegal drug possession. The High Court of South Africa ruling brings a strong message as South Africa continues its fight against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF).
Life sentence for Rodney Witbooi for the premeditated murder of his ex-wife
The case highlights the pattern of escalating violence often seen in abusive relationships.
In January 2020, Witbooi attempted to rape his former partner, Hayley Bruinders, after attacking her outside a nightclub in Pacaltsdorp, George. She fought back and was able to escape with the help of friends, leading to his arrest.

A Life Sentence for a Gender-Based Violence Perpetrator
While awaiting trial, Witbooi became involved with another woman, Sone Le Roux, who later became his wife. Over time, his behaviour again turned violent, resulting in multiple reports of domestic abuse and the issuing of a protection order, which he repeatedly ignored.
Justice for the Victim in the George Femicide Case
On 21 December 2022, despite being legally warned to stay away, Witbooi illegally entered the home where Le Roux lived. Armed with a panga, he attacked her after she told him their relationship was over. He also violently assaulted her sister, her sister’s partner, and a private security officer who attempted to intervene. Le Roux died from her injuries at the scene.

Court Finds Clear Premeditation
Senior State Advocate Evadne Kortje demonstrated to the court that the attack was intentional and premeditated:
- Witbooi returned to a home he was legally banned from
- He armed himself before entering
- He attacked with the intent to kill, targeting the head and face
The court convicted him of:
- Premeditated murder
- Attempted rape
- Attempted murder
- Housebreaking
- Illegal drug possession
He has also been declared unfit to own a firearm.
