The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has confirmed to Smile FM this morning that Milnerton High School has issued precautionary suspension letters to eight learners.

The eight learners are involved in the alleged physical and verbal assault of a Grade-10 learner at the school on Friday.

A disturbing video has been circulating on social media and has sparked outrage. WCED spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond, speaking to the Ryan O’Connor Breakfast Show, said there was a meeting last night.

“The school governing body met last night, they have issued precautionary suspension letters to eight learners and a disciplinary hearing is going to be held. With all the furor that happened over social media yesterday, I know that people are angry but we have to let due process happen.

Meanwhile, some parents of learners attending Milnerton High School are planning to gather there to voice their anger and concerns regarding bullying at the school.

A parent, Mpho Nkence, told SmileFM that her son is among several victims of bullying at the school recently, and explained that her son was initially too afraid to speak out.

Nkence says the group of parents will meet outside the school by 08:00 (on Wednesday), and are expected to meet with the police on the matter. A case of grievous assault has been opened in this regard.
