The 4-year-old boy, who was shot in Hanover Park on Wednesday afternoon, has passed away. Police say he died early this morning (02:00) in the hospital.

Western Cape police have arrested two 17-year-old suspects following the shooting in Moray court.

The incident occurred at around 14:30 in Moray Court, when suspects believed to be linked to gang activity opened fire in public. The child was struck by a stray bullet and rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Police launched an immediate search operation, which led to the swift arrest of the two teenage suspects shortly after the shooting. They are currently in custody and are expected to appear in court once they have been charged.

They will now be charged with murder.

Philippi police have since increased visibility in and around Moray Court, while detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Western Cape police management has condemned the “ruthless and reckless conduct” of those responsible, saying the continued endangerment of innocent lives by criminal elements will not be tolerated. Focused policing operations are ongoing in identified hotspots to curb gang-related violence.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist the investigation.

Members of the public can contact Detective Sergeant Xolani Baso on 082 469 6534 or 021 690 1516, or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Information can also be shared anonymously via the MySAPS mobile app.
