Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) has seen an 8% increase in domestic travel as well as a 5% rise in international arrivals. At the same time, cargo volumes also grew by a massive 56%. The City’s Economic Opportunities-MMC, James Vos says, the City’s aviation success leads to more jobs and economic opportunities.

“Every new connection in the skies above Cape Town fuels growth and opportunity on the ground for our residents,” he elaborated.

According to Cape Town Tourism’s Economic Value of Tourism Report, every 10 tourists creates one job. He has lauded Wesgro’s Air Access initiative, which celebrated 10 years of existence to contribute to the growth in the aviation sector. He has reiterated that aviation is a cornerstone of Cape Town’s economic growth mission. Vos says, in 2024, the airport welcomed over 10 million passengers and moved 75,000 tonnes of cargo.

This year’s figures already show increases. At the moment, there’s an 8% increase in domestic travel, a 5% rise in international arrivals and cargo volumes are up by a massive 56%.

“We will continue building on this progress,” Vos added.

Vos added that from November through March, which is the peak international schedule, Cape Town will be directly connected by 24 airlines. These airlines fly to 30 destinations across 35 routes. Weekly, there will be 228 flights.

He has stressed that each one of these connections represents far more than just a seat on a plane. Vos says, it means new jobs, thriving businesses and expanded opportunities for Capetonians.
