Fairmont High School and The Settlers High School said an investigation is underway following an alleged racism-related incident during an interschool rugby event over the weekend.

Neither school has confirmed exactly what happened, but footage from the match suggests that one of the players was called the k-word, resulting in the referee ending the game. 

In a video doing the rounds on social media, a voice believed to be that of a referee is heard calling for the coaches to be called in.

“I think I need both coaches. There was a k-word going on here, and I won’t tolerate it. I’m going to call the game, unfortunately. I can’t be part of racism, guys,” said the voice, while other voices are also heard agreeing with the sentiment.

In separate statements issued, both schools have noted that the matter is being investigated in accordance with their “school policies, applicable legislation and due process”.

Both schools have urged the public to refrain from sharing or interacting with alleged information on the incident, especially on social media. The schools advised that legal action can be taken against those who post or share content online. 

“This can escalate a sensitive situation and compromise the integrity of the investigation,” read the statements.

The Provincial Education Department’s Bronagh Hammond said it is aware of the matter. 

“The WCED has been made aware of the allegations. The matter is being investigated. We will provide any necessary support, including counselling, if required. The matter is receiving the necessary attention from both schools, and we ask that the schools are afforded this opportunity without interference or disruption,” said Hammond.
