Armed robber shot dead in Wellington

Published on

Wellington police have arrested three armed robbers and killed a fourth after a business robbery on Monday afternoon, 22 September.

The office of the provincial police commissioner, Thembisile Patekile, says the swift response by members resulted in the successful arrests shortly after the crime.

Officers received information about two suspicious-looking vehicles in the parking area of a Wellington supermarket. Upon arrival on the scene the two vehicles, one silver and one black Kia Picanto sped off.

Four suspects were then spotted running in the direction of the taxi rank, and officers gave chase on foot.

Police say one of the suspects pointed a firearm at officers, and he was fatally wounded.

The other three suspects were then arrested, and two 9mm pistols with ammunition and a plastic bag containing several cellphones were recovered.

The suspects are due to appear in Wellington Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 25 September, on charges of business robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of stolen property.
