The City’s Law Enforcement Department has confirmed an incident in Valhalla Park on Friday afternoon, where officers and their vehicles came under attack from members of the public.

Chaos broke out after an officer lost control of a vehicle while pursuing a suspect, accidentally colliding with three members of the public.

The officers, deployed as part of an operation in the area, had responded to gunshots at approximately 15:26.

They encountered an armed suspect who pointed a firearm at their vehicle. In the ensuing chaos, the driver crashed into a wall, injuring three people.

While officers were attending to the injured, some bystanders turned on them, pelting the vehicle with stones, attempting to set it alight, and stealing items from inside.

At least three additional Law Enforcement vehicles that arrived on the scene were also stoned.

The injured civilians were transported to Tygerberg Hospital. The LEAP officers involved have since been debriefed and are receiving support through the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP). No Law Enforcement officers were injured.

One suspect was initially arrested for malicious damage to property.

Following the City’s R20,000 reward for information, 21 people were detained over the weekend, with 11 suspects linked to the attack.

They also recovered some items that were stolen from the Law Enforcement vehicle during the attack on officers. This included bank cards, three Samsung tablets, a reflective vest, a hand radio, a body-worn camera and a set of car keys.

The suspects will be appearing at the Bishop Lavis Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 15 September 2025.

In another development on Sunday, officers conducting operations in the area received information about an abandoned cellphone. They confirmed that the phone belongs to one of the officers who was attacked.
