The circumstances that led to the murder of an off-duty police officer in Lwandle on Thursday morning are under investigation, after media reports that the officer was also a taxi owner affiliated with CATA.

CATA confirmed to media outlets that the 42-year-old was a former high-ranking executive.

In an official police statement, the motive is listed as being taxi-conflict related, but his alleged links to the taxi industry are not mentioned.

By law, police officers are not allowed to be involved in the taxi, alcohol or security industries.

The off-duty officer was driving down the Mgidlana street yesterday morning when unknown gunmen opened fire on him and fatally shot him in the upper body.

He then lost control of his vehicle, which came to a halt against the fence of a residence.

The suspects are yet to be arrested.

“We appeal to anyone with information to contact Capt Lukhanyo Magadla of the Provincial Detectives Serious and Violent Crime on 082 411 3245 or alternatively Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or via the MySAPS mobile application, anonymously.”

The killing comes amid ongoing conflict between CATA and CODETA over disputed routes, with recent attacks in Philippi East, Khayelitsha and Macassar leaving at least five people dead.

A few days ago, the Western Cape Government obtained an interdict preventing CATA and CODETA from perpetrating taxi violence or intimidation.

At the time, CODETA said it would challenge the interdict.
