Peter De Villiers cleared of sexual assault charges

Published on

Former Springbok coach Peter de Villiers has been acquitted of all charges of sexual assault.

The case was heard in the Malmesbury Regional Court on Thursday, at which time the court ruled that there was insufficient evidence to support the allegations.

The case was brought against him in early 2024 by a former colleague in the GOOD Party, who claimed that De Villiers had assaulted her at a work event.

The allegations, which included attempted sexual assault, sexual assault and crimen injuria, were formally lodged on 31 January last year. De Villiers was served a charge sheet less than a month later, on 23 February.

Throughout the proceedings, De Villiers maintained his innocence. His legal team filed a section 174 application earlier this month, calling for the charges to be dismissed. The court ruled in his favour on Thursday.

The GOOD Party, which initially confirmed the complaint, described the allegations at the time as “misconduct” involving both sexual assault and harassment. The party confirmed that it had pursued its own internal processes.
