Disgruntled students protest at College of Cape Town

Published on

The Athlone Police have registered a case of public violence for investigation following protest action at the College of Cape Town in Crawford on Tuesday morning.

According to police reports, approximately 150 disgruntled learners staged a protest in Kromboom Road in front of an institute of learning.

The learners allegedly used different objects to block the roads and started a fire to prevent community members from using the entrance to the institute.

According to the City’s Traffic Services spokesperson, Maxine Bezuidenhot, protestors were also not allowing students to exit the premises.

Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi says local police members from Athlone SAPS are static at the crime scene. Swartbooi confirmed that members of Public Order policing have been deployed to the area to restore calm.

“No one sustained any injuries, and we confirm that police members did not fire any gunshots in the direction of the disgruntled learners,” added Swartbooi

No one has since been arrested.

“We appeal to anyone with information to please call Crime stop on 08600 10111”
