Cape Town has Africa’s Leading Green Hotel again. Hotel Verde Cape Town Airport was once again named Africa’s Leading Green Hotel at the prestigious 2025 World Travel Awards. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, Alderman James Vos, recently congratulated the staff at the hotel for their achievement.
Vos added, “This award is a win for our city and a clear signal that Cape Town’s tourism offering is world-class, forward-thinking, and future-fit.”

Cape Town has Africa’s Leading Green Hotel, again
He says the hotel was awarded Africa’s Leading Green Hotel for the second year running. Vos says this is a powerful achievement that showcases not only the hotel’s sustainability leadership, but Cape Town’s status as a front-runner in responsible, eco-smart tourism.
“We aim to grow tourism in a way that delivers real, lasting benefits for Capetonians. Hotel Verde is proof that this version is not only possible, it’s already happening,” said Alderman Vos.
Hotel Verde strikes green and gold
Hotel Verde won the award for its eco-friendly practices. This includes operating on renewable energy, utilising advanced water-saving technologies, and implementing a zero-waste-to-landfill policy. Guests can also generate power while cycling in the gym. At the same time, they can participate in weekly Earth Hour events. Your eco-friendly behaviour, while staying over, can also earn you in-house rewards.

First hotel in South Africa to achieve Net Zero Waste status
At the same time, the hotel is also beaming with pride as the first hotel in South Africa to achieve Net Zero Waste status. It’s also the first in Africa to receive LEED Platinum certification. Alderman Vos says the City will publish Cape Town’s new Tourism Development framework later this year.

This will help boost growing numbers in the City by attracting more tourists. He says part of that plan means creating specialised campaigns, increasing direct air connectivity and forging global partnerships with cities and tourism companies.
Alderman Vos concluded, “Hotel Verde shows that luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand. They’re setting the standard and inspiring others to follow.”
Vos added that the strategy will put a premium on value-for-money for local businesses, job creation, and responsible tourism practices that protect our natural and cultural heritage.
