Police in the Southern Cape have opened an inquest docket after the body of a missing Mossel Bay man was found in his home this week.

The family of 29-year-old John Dalton, from Vogelsang Landgoed, also known as Vakansieplaas, reported him missing on 29 May 2025 after not returning home.

A search party consisting of members attached to the Da Gamaskop police, George Public Order Police, Da Gamaskop Community Police Forum volunteers and the community was initiated in the vicinity of Vakansieplaas in Mossel Bay.

Following a nearly month-long search, Dalton’s body was found inside the ceiling of his home with a rope around his neck on Wednesday.

According to the Da Gamaskop police, reports available suggest that police were summoned to a house just after 14:00. Upon arrival, the police members were directed to a room where the body of the missing man was found in the ceiling with a rope around the neck.

Police Sergeant Christopher Spies says the initial discovery was made by personnel of a service provider who was busy with an installation at the residence.

Spies confirmed that no foul play is suspected.
