The Bredasdorp Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to an 18-year-old youth, who was arrested earlier this month, in connection with the murder of a retired Bredasdorp teacher.
The investigating officer testified on Monday morning that the youth, Shaun Swart, is only connected to the case because he took a joyride with the 16-year-old minor suspect, after the teen allegedly stole the teacher’s vehicle.
The 82-year-old Sammy Cloete was stabbed to death and robbed at his home in Jacaranda Street on 12 July.
Both suspects were arrested mere hours after the murder, after they were spotted driving around in the teacher’s vehicle.
The court heard on Monday that the 18-year-old suspect, Shaun Swart, was not involved in the murder, but that the 16-year old had picked him up, after the alleged offence.
The court ordered Swart to stay at an alternative address in Struisbaai, while the minor remains in custody.
The case has been postponed to 30 July for further investigation.
