Another Fine-Free Week is here. The City of Cape Town is turning over a new (book) leaf with a Fine-Free Week just in time for the winter school holidays! From Monday, 30 June to Saturday, 5 July 2025, readers aged 17 and under can return overdue library materials without paying a cent in late fees.
“Libraries are not just book havens—they’re community hubs full of activities for the whole family.”
That’s right – it’s an amnesty celebration, and it’s happening at all 102 public libraries across the city.
Cape Town Libraries Offer Fine-Free Week for Young Readers
Whether it’s a dusty novel, a misplaced comic, or that long-lost audiobook, now’s your chance to bring it back – no questions asked. And don’t worry about where you borrowed it from. You can return it to any City of Cape Town library.

Just keep in mind: replacement fees for lost or damaged items still apply, but your overdue fines will magically disappear!

The Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, councillor Francine Higham, says Fine-Free Week is a fantastic opportunity to return books and reconnect with your library. She says libraries are not just book havens, but that they’re community hubs full of activities for the whole family.
What happened last year?
During the March 2025 Fine-Free Week, over 13,000 items were returned — let’s beat that number!
