A high-speed police chase on the N1 ended in chaos and arrests yesterday, when members of the Maitland Flying Squad nabbed three house-breaking suspects in Brackenfell.
The trio had allegedly stormed a home in Yzerfontein, fleeing in a stolen Toyota Urban Cruiser and other valuable items.
Police were immediately notified, and they noticed a suspicious-looking vehicle on the N1 and gave chase.
The driver of the stolen Toyota tried to push the police vehicle off the road at one point.
But their getaway came to an abrupt halt when the driver lost control and slammed into a lamp post.
The robbers reportedly turned off the N1 onto Okavango Road, where they crashed into the pole on the corner of Frans Conradie Road.
The police’s Joseph Swartbooi says the suspects then resisted arrest.
“The police members brought the situation under control and searched the vehicle. The three men were detained for the possession of a stolen motor vehicle, the possession of presumed stolen property, the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, an attempted murder after the attack on police and resisting arrest.”
They appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court today.
