There was some drama in the Cape Town City council yesterday, and on social media, after the National Coloured Congress tabled a motion of no confidence in Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
This was ahead of Hill-Lewis tabling the City’s revised budget.

In the end, the motion was defeated, with 138 councillors voting against it, 46 in favour, and one abstention.
Before the matter was heard, Hill-Lewis launched into a tirade against the NCC, accusing the party of acting like thugs.
Photos of NCC leader Fadiel Adams and other party members, brandishing weapons, were shown on the big projector screen.
The war of words escalated after Adams took to Facebook last night to attack the Mayor and the DA.
Adams made very serious counter allegations in his expletive-laden Facebook post, accusing the Mayor of lying.
Adams has also had run-ins with the MMC for Safety and Security JP Smith before.
Adams recently accused the Metro police of allegedly ‘losing’ 27 firearms.
Smith responded on Facebook, slamming the NCC’s misinformation on the issue, claryfing that the weapons referred to historic firearms that were purchased and licensed under various municipalities prior to their integration into a single UNICITY, namely the City of Cape Town in 2002.
He added there were systemic record-keeping failures within the Central Firearms Register (CFR), where firearms were either never properly documented due to administrative irregularities or erroneously linked to the City’s Official Institution without supporting evidence.
