The City’s Metro Police officers confiscated cocaine with an estimated street value of R35,000 after a high-speed chase in Brackenfell on Sunday.
According to the Safety and Security Directorate, officers attached to the K9 Unit saw a motorist disobey a traffic sign on Brackenfell Boulevard at around 16:00. Officers tried to approach the driver, but he refused to stop, and it resulted in a high-speed chase.
The vehicle was eventually stopped, and the driver jumped out and fled the scene. According to authorities, the suspect dropped a bag containing cocaine during the chase, and after the man was caught, he tried to bribe the officers with R6,860 cash found in his car.
The 45-year-old man was arrested for the possession of cocaine, bribery, and resisting arrest and was detained at Brackenfell SAPS.
“Every week our officers confiscate a smorgasbord of illicit drugs which otherwise would have ended up in our communities. Drugs are a financial resource for gangs and fuel their activities, violence, growth and power,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith
At the same time, Metro Police officers reportedly confiscated two illegal firearms in two days in Hanover Park. Two suspects, aged 32 and 25, were detained at Philippi SAPS.
According to the City, enforcement agencies have confiscated 46 firearms and 300 rounds of ammunition from several communities, including Hanover Park, Manenberg, Nyanga and Lavender Hill since January.
“This may seem like a drop in the ocean of weapons that are flooding our streets and tearing communities apart. Every weapon confiscated is one less that can be used to commit a crime or take a life. We remain committed to the safety of all our residents,” added Smith
