Capetonians to be hit with a cold, wet and windy weekend

Published on

A cold, wet and windy weekend lies ahead for Cape Town residents as a cold front is set to hit the Mother City. This will bring along strong to gale force winds and rough sea conditions along the Western Cape coastline.

The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 4 warning about damaging winds and waves associated with an incoming cold front this weekend.

The forecast is reportedly for strong to gale force north-westerly to westerly winds along the Western Cape coastline between Friday evening and Saturday evening. These strong winds are, however, expected to become moderate from Saturday afternoon.

According to the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre (DRMC), potential weather impacts could include uprooted trees, damage to roofs, an increased risk of runaway fires and disruption of coastal activities.

The DRMC has therefore urged the public to secure objects on their properties that could be carried by the wind. This would include outside furniture, sheds and yard ornaments. Capetonians are also asked to be mindful of potential damage to garage doors, sliding doors and windows.

When travelling, motorists are warned to be on the lookout for obstructions on the roadway, like fallen trees or other debris.

Any weather-related emergency can be reported to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700.
