BUDGET: Should Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana resign or be fired?

Published on

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana says that stepping down from his role is not something he is considering.

Following a media briefing held by National Treasury this week, Godongwana was asked to respond to the mounting calls for his head to be placed on the chopping block after his budget blunder.

This relates to his proposals for Value Added Tax (VAT) to be hiked during the presentation of his two previous budget speeches, which has left politicians, businesses, and south africans feeling disgruntled.

Godongwana maintains that the budget impasse was not something he had control over, as it was the first time a budget was presented to a coalition government — a first for the Government of National Unity (GNU). He also added that it is President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call to make if he needs to vacate his post.

“That is not my intention (to resign). That decision does not lie with me. It lies with the president. The president understands the nature of the challenges in dealing with this problem,” he said.
