Table Mountain National Park has boosted safety on the mountain by deploying a helicopter. In a major move to enhance safety and security, Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) has been bolstered with the deployment of a SANParks helicopter. This initiative is part of the South African National Parks (SANParks) Safety and Security Strategy, designed to ensure the well-being of both visitors and park staff.

The helicopter, typically stationed at Kruger National Park, has now been temporarily assigned to TMNP to support a series of strategic safety interventions. This includes the recent expansion of the elite Sea, Air, and Mountain (SEAM) special operations unit, aimed at tackling safety threats across varied terrain.

Helicopter Deployment

The presence of the helicopter acts as both a visible deterrent to crime and a tool for swift emergency response. On its very first day of operation, the helicopter aided in the successful apprehension of a suspicious individual within the park. Working in coordination with ground teams, the suspect, who was found carrying a knife and had a history of criminal activity, was swiftly located and detained.

Increased Aerial Surveillance and Rapid Response

Aerial operations such as this have consistently demonstrated their value, particularly during high-traffic seasons like Easter, Christmas, and New Year. The combination of aerial surveillance and well-coordinated ground patrols has proven effective in preventing crime and ensuring prompt responses to potential threats, including illegal fires.

Proven Success During Peak Seasons

SANParks Head of Communications, JP Louw, emphasized that Table Mountain National Park remains open to the public between sunrise and sunset. He advises visitors to act responsibly by travelling in groups, equipping themselves properly for the terrain, and staying aware of weather conditions.
