Cape Town’s city centre will come alive this week as the much-anticipated Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) Free Jazz Concert returns to Greenmarket Square on Thursday.
The free open-air event, a longstanding even held before the main festival, promises a vibrant evening in the heart of the CBD.
Headlining the stage are British acid jazz pioneers, Incognito, and South Africa’s iconic kwaito group, TKZee. Also set to perform are The Ploemies, Hannah Ray, Andrea Fortuin and Fancy Galada, with DJ Eazy keeping the energy high between sets.
Running from 16:30 to 22:00, the concert is free to the public and expected to draw large crowds to Greenmarket Square.
“The Free Jazz Concert has become an annual tradition for Capetonians and visitors alike, who come together to enjoy and celebrate their love of music. It is an opportunity for the City, working with the organisers of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, to provide a musical experience with big name artists for those who are not able to get tickets for the main festival,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith

Road closures
To accommodate the event, temporary road closures will be in place from 06:00 on Wednesday, 23 April until Friday, 25 April in and around Greenmarket Square.
Affected roads include:
- Burg Street (between Church and Longmarket Streets)
- Longmarket Street (between Long and Adderley Streets)
- Burg Street (between Hout and Shortmarket Streets)
- Shortmarket Street (between Long and Adderley Streets)
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and allow for extra travel time.
Following the concert, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival takes place at the CTICC from 25–26 April, featuring over 30 artists across multiple stages.
