Residents of Mitchells Plain and the greater Cape Town now have access to a state-of-the-art new Home Affairs Office. The Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Leon Schreiber, officially opened the new facility last week.

He was joined by Western Cape MEC Ricardo Mackenzie and the Mayor of the City of Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis.

Residents had complained about the old dilapidated offices for years. It was beset with problems, snaking queues and not enough staff.

The spacious, modern new office includes new technology like cameras at the counter to eliminate queuing for photos and is also three times bigger, with 250 seats instead of 50.

Schreiber says the new office serves as tangible proof to the people of Mitchells Plain that Home Affairs is delivering “dignity for all.”

“The vastly improved facilities and technology will transform their daily interactions with our services. We have brought Home Affairs closer than ever to the people of Mitchells Plain – and in the coming months, our plans to expand access to services through many more bank branches will take us closer still to delivering Home Affairs @ home.”

Mayor Hill-Lewis has lauded the Minister for taking action after many years of complaints falling on deaf ears.

“The new Minister Leon Schreiber set about fixing it, and in a matter of months, we are here officially opening the beautiful new Home Affairs office in Mitchells Plain. Smart, modern, caring, dignified, much bigger, and with better tech. Having Ministers in the GNU, who actually care about SA, really helps!”

For residents, the proof will be in the pudding to see if this new facility will lead to better service delivery.
