Published on

Two children, aged 4 and 7, have died in an informal settlement fire in Kalksteenfontein on Monday night.

According to the City of Cape Town’s Fire & Rescue Service, its teams were alerted at around 19:10 on Monday of a dwelling alight on Soetkop Street.

Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City’s Fire and Rescue Service, says crews from Epping and Bellville were dispatched to the scene and found two informal structures alight.

The firefighters managed to extinguish the fire by 20:30 and found that it had destroyed two informal structures and partially damaged two formal dwellings.

Carelse says the bodies of the two children were discovered beneath the debris and were certified by medical personnel.

“The scene was handed over to the South African Police Service to investigate the circumstances around the incident.” added Carelse

Police Sergeant Wesley Twigg says Bishop Lavis police registered an inquest for investigation following a fire which broke out at the premises in Soetkop Street, Kalksteenfontein.

Twigg says the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

“Anyone with any information about this incident can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.”
