The infamous Voëlklip near Herold’s Bay is in the headlines yet again…this time for the death of a woman.

According to George police detectives, a 41-year-old woman veered off the so-called “cliff of death” this morning. Her body was retrieved from the nearby water hours later.

“Preliminary reports available indicates that emergency service personnel were dispatched to the scene at about 08:50. Investigation on scene revealed that a vehicle went over a cliff. A search and rescue operation was launched and the body of the victim was found just after noon,” said police spokesperson sergeant Chris Spies.

An inquest docket has been opened for further investigation, with authorities adding that no foul play is suspected. Police have refrained from sharing the identity of the deceased.

Just over a week ago, police retrieved the body of a 59-year-old man near the very same cliff. At the time, local law enforcement officials sighted a body floating on the water on Thursday, 20 March. He was declared dead when emergency personnel responded.

The scenic spot in the Southern Cape has, over the years, gained a dark reputation for being a suicide hotspot.
