US rapper, Rick Ross, explores, performs & features in ads in SA

Rick Ross is making the most of his time in South Africa, mixing business with pleasure as he soaks up the local culture while also starring in a homegrown ad campaign.

Best known for hits like Hustlin’, Aston Martin Music, and The Boss, the American rapper recently appeared in a commercial for South African retailer Pick n Pay. The ad, which is  a playful take on DJ Khaled’s hit All I Do Is Win – a track Ross featured on – shows him shopping alongside South African comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout. Bezuidenhout takes on the character “Bietjie Smalls”.

The fun and energetic commercial sees Ross rapping a few lines while enjoying himself in the store, nodding to his reputation for wealth and success. Meanwhile, locals had a lot to say.

Nonetheless, Ross has solidified his place as a heavyweight in the hip-hop industry in the US, with a nearly two-decade career under his belt. His 2006 debut album, Port of Miami, catapulted him to fame, collaborating with industry icons like Jay-Z, and Lil Wayne. His signature deep voice and larger-than-life persona keep him a dominant force in hip-hop.

Beyond his work on the ad, Ross has been embracing everything South Africa has to offer. Last month, Ross encouraged his peers and followers to make their way to Cape Town, as he soaked up in the sun in the city.

Whether he’s performing, sightseeing, or making waves in local advertising, Ross is clearly having a blast in South Africa.
