A fire in Masiphumelele has been brought under control

A fire in the Masiphumelele informal settlement, early this morning, has been brought under control. According to the City of Cape Town, officials had received an emergency call
at approximately 04:30 am.

Fire and Rescue Service Spokesperson Jermaine Carelse says the first arriving officer from Kommetjie Road saw the extent of the fire and called for additional resources. Carelse added that they currently have 14 frontline firefighting resources from several fire stations on the scene. At the same time, over 70 staff members are present.

Additionally, officials have set up an Incident Command Post on Houmoed Avenue. Operations are being conducted from this post. Carelse says electricity to the area has also been disconnected for the duration of the incident. He says this mitigates any potential risk from overhead wires.

Gift of the Givers staff members have been deployed to Masi

Meanwhile, teams from the humanitarian aid organization, Gift of the Givers have been deployed to Masi, following the latest fire. A spokesperson Ali Sablay says they’ve been receiving calls for help, from 5 oçlock this morning. He says once this site is declared safe by firefighters, their staff will go into the area, to provide aid. At the same time, their teams are also assisting the victims of 5 other blazes, over the last 5 days, in the Western Cape.

Law Enforcement Officers on the scene

Carelse concluded that Law Enforcement Officers have also been asked to patrol the fire lines, as there have been attempts to cut fire hoses. For now, no injuries or fatalities were reported. Dozens of firefighters are still on the scene.
