Avoid a complimentary overnight accommodation package in jail. That’s the advice from the City of Cape Town’s JP Smith with the Traffic Roadshow currently being held at the Cape Town Civic Centre. Motorists with outstanding fines can go to the Civic Centre and ask prosecutors from the Department of Justice for a reduction in their fines.

Safety and Security Mayco Member, JP Smith says if you have outstanding traffic fines and if you committed an offence, you must answer for it in court or you pay an admission of guilt fine. The Traffic Roadshow, taking place from 3 to 11 December, in the CBD, will be an opportunity for you to get a reduction of your fine.

“If you fail to appear in court, we are coming to your home or work, to arrest you- to ensure you get your day in court, ” added Smith.

At the same time, he says the City’s Camera Network will also be on the lookout for you.

He said, “If you are hiding, our camera network will still find you, and we will pull you over, so as to arrest you.”

Smith is encouraging transgressing motorists to go speak to the prosecutors on settling outstanding fines and ask them for a reduction.

He has warned those people who think that the law doesn’t apply to them, that he’ll make sure they understand that the law applies to every road user.

He says if you don’t pay your fines, the City will be happy to arrange a complimentary overnight accommodation package for you at the nearest cells of the South African Police Services.

Smith concluded, “It’s our way of making sure, this festive season, we only have law-abiding motorists left on our roads.”

He says, apart from traffic fines, the roadshow will also provide an opportunity for customers to resolve queries relating to their City rates/services accounts. They can also complete applications for indigent and/or pensioner’s rebates.
