The City of Cape Town is urging residents, businesses, and other stakeholders to participate in the development of the Spine Road Corridor in Khayelitsha through a local spatial development framework (LSDF).
The City will host two workshops on October 16 and 31, 2024, to engage the community in shaping the future of this vital area.
The Spine Road Corridor spans from the intersection with Japhta K Masemola Road to Mew Way, encompassing adjacent neighbourhoods such as Ilitha Park, Eyethu, Khaya, Ekuphumleni, Mandela Park, and Sabata Dalindyebo Square.
This area is heavily congested, with a wide variety of land uses ranging from car washes to informal businesses, putting immense pressure on the road infrastructure and access to essential services.
“There is an urgent need for a spatial vision to guide sustainable development along this corridor, supporting economic growth while addressing mobility and environmental sustainability,” said Alderman Eddie Andrews, Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment.
The City’s Spine Road Corridor contextual report highlights the challenges and opportunities in the area, including traffic congestion, informal land uses, and fragmented development.
It outlines key opportunities to transform the corridor into a thriving urban space that improves the quality of life for residents, boosts the local economy, and creates a more inviting public realm.
The workshops aim to gather input from the community on the LSDF, allowing residents and businesses to contribute ideas and offer feedback on future development projects.
Alderman Andrews emphasized the importance of collaboration, encouraging locals to engage in the process and help shape a sustainable, well-planned future for the Spine Road Corridor.
