Learner dies, 28 others injured, after scholar transport taxi overturns

Published on

The driver of a scholar transport vehicle is in police custody after his taxi was involved in a fatal accident in Mitchells Plain earlier today, which claimed the life of one learner.

The 25-year-old driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, and overturned on Swartklip Road just after 07:00 this morning.

A 14-year-old learner was killed in the incident and 28 other schoolchildren were injured. Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk says according to reports, the taxi was transporting the pupils to different schools in Wynberg and Mitchells Plain when the crash occured.

“Currently, it can be confirmed that a 14-year-old school girl died due to injuries sustained.”

Van Wyk says the 25-year-old driver was not in possession of a valid driving licence. In addition, the vehicle was not roadworthy and it was overloaded.

The MEC for Mobility Isaac Sileku has expressed his shock and sadness at the fatal crash.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic accident involving a vehicle transporting learners this morning, which resulted in the heartbreaking loss of a young life. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time. We also wish a swift recovery to those who were injured. The safety and well-being of our children are of the utmost importance, and this incident is a devastating reminder of the fragility of life.”

This fatal crash comes after 13 learners were injured in Manenberg on Wednesday, after the microbus taxi they were transported in collided with a truck on Klipfontein road.

Police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.

Meanwhile, the provincial mobility department is embarking on an initiative to upskill scholar transport drivers.

Next week, the department, together with the Road Accident Fund is hosting a special Defensive Driving Workshop.

The workshop is aimed at improving road safety for learners and teaching crucial skills to drivers.

This initiative is open to all scholar transport drivers and operators with 7 or 16-seater vehicles (including the driver), who have existing contracts or arrangements with parents/guardians and are operating within Cape Town.

Participation in the workshop is free of charge, and it will take place during school hours, ensuring minimal disruption to daily operations. Find out more HERE.
