Tyla leads the pack with SAMA nominations

South Africa’s rising star, Tyla, continues to make waves both internationally and at home. Fresh off her recent MTV Video Music Award win and already boasting a Grammy, the singer has secured five nominations at the 30th annual South African Music Awards (SAMAs), cementing her status as one of the country’s best talents.

The nominations were announced on Thursday, with Tyla being recognised in several key categories. She is up for the SAMPRA Album of the Year, Ukhozi FM Female Artist of the Year, SANTAM Newcomer of the Year, Best Pop Album, and Best Collaboration for her hit single “Water” featuring Travis Scott.

 

In the competitive SAMPRA Album of the Year category, Tyla faces tough competition from the likes of Kabza De Small and Mthunzi’s Isimo, Daliwonga’s Dali Dali, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s Soothe My Soul – Songs From Our South African Church. Her self-titled album, Tyla, is also in the running for Best Pop Album, where it competes against albums from Mila Smith, Will Linley, Paxton, and Matthew Mole.

 

Tyla’s collaboration with Travis Scott on “Water” is nominated for Best Collaboration, where it will compete with songs from Mörda, De Mthuda, and Kabza De Small. Meanwhile, her fellow contenders for Ukhozi FM Female Artist of the Year include Brenda Mtambo, Lwah Ndlunkulu, Lordkez, and Xolly Mncwango.

Victoria’s South African Angel

 

The talented songstress is also preparing to make history next month as she headlines the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Tyla will join music icon, Cher, and K-pop star, Lalalalisa, in the first all-female line-up in the show’s history. The 15 October show also marks the first time in five years that the runway has been opened for Victoria’s Secret Angels.

 

 

Tyra Banks will also be getting her angel wings back for the show, set to take place on 15 October 2024.
