3 vandalized MyCiTi stations are to be rebuilt. The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate says the contract for the rebuilding has started. The vandalised MyCiTi stations are located in Dunoon, Joe Slovo and Phoenix.

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas says the Phoenix MyCiti station will also be renamed, following a public participation process.

He says renaming the Phoenix Station to Freedom Station was approved last week at the Council sitting on 12 June.

Quintas says, “These stations need to be rebuilt so that the residents who depend on this reliable and safe public transport service can have access to the MyCiTi network again, from as close to home as possible.”

Members of the community were asked for their input and the majority of residents said they support the name change.

He says the contractor has established their site in the proximity of the station locations and will start with the construction soon.

If all should go, according to plan, the projects should be finished by November 2025.

“It was of utmost importance to us that we restore the MyCiTi services at the 3 destroyed stations, but with enhanced security and vandalism-resistant measures,” Councillor Quintas concluded.

 

Quintas added that the Freedom Station, formerly Phoenix, is situated on Omurumba Road opposite the Joe Slovo suburb.

At the same time, he said that certain measures to mitigate the risk of these closed station buildings being damaged again, and to ensure continuity of operations, have been incorporated into the new designs.
