Quantum Foods – the parent company of Nova Feeds – has hired an engineer to conduct an independent investigation, after an explosion at its Malmesbury factory killed one man, and left two others with serious injuries.
On Monday, the blast occurred at around 15h15, sending shockwaves throughout the small town. At the time, residents flooded social media with questions about the “loud bang”. While describing the intensity of the blast, some residents said they thought it was an earthquake.
The cause of the blast remains unclear.
The Swartland Municipality’s Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the site and extinguished the flames.
“The three people were treated and moved to hospitals. We have learned that one patient has succumbed to his wounds during the night. The explosion occurred at a loading zone where raw materials were offloaded. The Municipal Fire and Rescue Services contained the fire and extinguished it,” said spokesperson Mart-Marié Haasbroek.
Haasbroek further elaborated that the damage caused by the blaze is minimal.
“The damaged area has been roped off and the rest of the site has been declared safe for continued operations. The company has contracted an engineer to conduct an independent investigation into the incident and the Municipality will give its full cooperation where necessary,” added Haasbroek.
Additionally, Malmesbury Police stated that an inquest docket has been opened for further investigation:
“Three victims between 25 and 45 were hospitalised. The 25-year-old victim succumbed in hospital due to injuries sustained. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. The company is saddened to announce that the critically injured individual passed away during the night. The other two injured individuals are in a serious but stable condition. The company will support the affected individuals and families where needed.
The investigations to determine the cause and impact of the explosion will continue during the day and the company will provide all the necessary assistance to the relevant authorities.
Feed production operations continued during the night and as reported damage was limited to the raw material intake area.
