Level 4 weather warning – wet, cold and windy City

The South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level 4 warning for heavy rainfall that could lead to localised flooding of roads and susceptible settlements. The warning has been issued to the City of Cape Town, southern parts of the West Coast, western parts of Cape Winelands and western parts of Overberg districts. The forcasted weather warning is in place for Tuesday, 4 June 2024.

A yellow level 2 warning has also been issued for damaging winds has also been predicted. According to the weather service, these winds could lead to difficulty in navigation at sea of small vessels and personal watercrafts.

 

Strong winds is expected between Cape Point and Cape Agulhas today but Cape Agulhas to Plettenberg Bay on Tuesday, 4 June 2024.

 

These cold, wet and windy conditions will continue until Wednesday, with possible snowfalls expected, which will likely exacerbate conditions.

 

 

The City of Cape Town has assured residents that Disaster Risk Management Centre (DRMC) teams have been alerted and are on stand-by to deal with any impacts brought by the forcasted adverse weather expected in the metro.

 

The DRMC has requested that residents please help reduce risks to their properties by:

  • Clearing out drainage systems
  • Raising the floor level of a structure so that it is higher than the natural ground level
  • Raise furniture on bricks to clear from the floor to limit water damage
  • Make sandbags
  • Dig trenches around the house to divert water away from the house
  • Report blocked drains, intakes and illegal dumping – illegal dumping in the storm water canals and sewers make flooding worse
  • Waterproof roofs, clear gutters and remove dead tree branches

 

For emergencies, residents can contact the Public Emergency Communication Centre by dialling 107 from a landline or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone.
