Bridget, the truck eating bridge in Muizenberg, saved the day on Thursday, stopping truck hijackers in their tracks.

A goods truck, with Takelot signage on it, was hijacked in Oceanview earlier in the day.

But as the two suspects were speeding towards the infamous railway bridge, they ignored the height warning, and they were catapulted into the windscreen of the truck, as the trailer of the vehicle slammed into the bridge.

Dazed, both occupants sat injured on the sidewalk as a crowd gathered.

At this point, both occupants took off running in different directions, with one of the suspects heading back towards the main road where a getaway vehicle was waiting.

The other suspect fled in the direction of Strandfontein but was quickly apprehended by one of the local security companies.

It then emerged that the truck had been earlier hijacked in Oceanview.

The MMC of Safety and Security JP Smith says goods vehicles continue to be targeted by criminal syndicates, and he says law enforcement services respond regularly to such occurrences and have recovered numerous vehicles.

Recently the City’s SSIU received information of a location in Airport Industria where such stolen goods were being kept and after raiding the premises, was able to recover several consignments that were taken during various hijackings.
