Tebogo Letsile: From Unknown to Breaking Wayde’s World Record

Published on

This year’s Olympics might be a few months away but there’s a rising star who’s breaking records with relative ease. Those records aren’t just any old records but milestones many thought would not be broken for at least a few decades!

Botswana’s 20-year-old sprinter, Letsile Tebogo, is making waves in the track and field world. He recently broke the 300-meter world record, finishing the race in a staggering 30.69 seconds. This feat surpasses the previous record held by Wayde van Niekerk.

But who’s record did Wayde break in the first place and why 300m?

Quick note, the 300 meters is an uncommon (meaning not on an Olympic or World Championship program) sprinting event in track and field competitions, meaning that it’s NOT on the Olympic or World Championship program.

To answer the question of whose record Wayde broke, Michael Johnson. He’s arguably one of GOAT to do it, before the world lost its collective mind when Usain Bolt hit the scene in the early mid 2000’s.

Michael Johnson set the world ablaze as he recorded the fast 300m ever and it was right here in Pretoria on 24 March in Pretoria!

Seven years later in 2017, 400 m Olympic champion and world record holder would change Wayde van Niekerk would run the fastest 300 meter race ever with his 30.81-second victory at the Golden Spike Meet in Ostrava, Czech Republic, chopping 0.15s off the American icon Michael Johnson’s 17-year-old world record.

It’s 2024! Enter Tebogo Letsile! who holds the U20 world record for the 100-meter event.

Here’s his world record breaking run!

The sprinting world has been put on notice! Noah Lykes and Erryion Knighton better be taking notes, there’s a new kid on the block! He’s name is Letsile Tebogo!
