LISTEN: Mountain bikers chase muggers into arms of the police

Published on

One of the mountain bikers who played a significant role in securing the arrest of two suspected muggers on the Tamboerskloof side of Signal Hill earlier this week says there needs to be much more police visibility on biking and hiking trails.

The group of 5 mountain bikers decided to take matters into their own hands after the two robbers threatened them with a knife, and stole one of their cellphones.

One of the cyclists, who does not want to be named, says they chased the two criminals off the hill, and eventually found police at the bottom of the road, who then sprang into action.

He also added that they hardly ever see police of mountain rangers patrolling trails, and spoke about the need for the authorities work strategically with their resources to prevent criminality, instead of just reacting to it.

He took issue with the City and SANParks taking much of the credit for the arrests, when they were initially nowhere to be seen.
