Today marked the inauguration of Fairmount High School’s newly refurbished cutting-edge science laboratory. This achievement is the result of a collaborative effort between Advancing Knowledge NPC, the Archway Foundation, and the Western Cape Education Department.
Under The Science Laboratory Refurbishment Programme, physical science labs across the metro have been refurbished, equipped with state-of-the-art scientific apparatus and chemicals, and comprehensive training for educators. The science training, however, is not restricted to selected schools only. Teachers from neighboring schools have also benefited from this training, in an effort to broaden the program’s impact.

In addition to the Fairmount High School science lab, eight more schools have been fortunate recipients of new laboratories this year, through this partnership. These schools include:
- Diazville Secondary School – Saldanha
- Erica Primary School – Belhar
- Hermeslaan Primary School – Atlantis
- Kraaifontein Secondary School – Kraaifontein
- Louwville Secondary School – Vredenburg
- Schoonspruit Secondary School – Malmesbury
- Trafalgar High School – Zonnebloem
In terms of funding, the education department contributed 40% of the total project cost, with the two partners contributing 30% each. Collectively, R14,175,000 was contributed to the project this year.
This partnership has made a substantial impact on schools across the province. It has assisted 103 institutions in establishing science laboratories since 2011.
The Education Department says it is eager to expand its collaborations with nonprofit partners and the private sector. This will help address the challenges at Western Cape schools.
