These celebs announced their splits in 2023 – some, even shattered the earth and caused all kinds of pandemonium – and even hinted at the reasons behind it. While we have just passed the halfway mark in the year, there have been many breakups.
JUNE 2023
- Avril Lavigne and Tyga. The singer and rapper split after being together for just four months. They were linked back in February just after Avril and Mod Sun called off their engagement. The Complicated singer went public with Tyga in March during Paris Fashion Week.
- Taylor Swift and Matty Healy. After a month-long speculation, Taylor and Matty called it quits in early June. A source told PEOPLE magazine that the relationship was just “casual”.

MAY 2023
- Billie Eilish and Jesse Rutherford. The pair broke up in mid-May after dating less than a year. They allegedly split on amicable terms and ‘remain good friends’, a rep told PEOPLE in a statement. They added that cheating rumours ‘are false’.
- Kevin Costner and Christine Baumgartner. Christine filed for divorce after 18 years of marriage. Costner’s rep told the media that the split was ‘beyond his control’. It was truly a heartbreaking split.
APRIL 2023
- Elle Fanning and Max Minghella. The Maleficent actress confirmed the news in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK. She told them that she was “a hopeless romantic” and believed in “love at first sight”. They were together for four years.
- Alex Pettyfer and Toni Garrn. The pair got divorced after two years of marriage. Model Toni announced on social media in April that despite the divorce, she and actor Alex would remain “as friends and co-parents” to their daughter Luca.
- Drake Bell and Janet Von Schmeling. Janet filed for divorce, one week after Bell was reported missing, and endangered in Florida. He was later found safe. She cited “irreconcilable difference” for the end of the marriage. She reportedly requested legal and physical custody of her and Drake’s child, as well as spousal support.
- Dan Reynolds and Aja Volkman. The Imagine Dragons singer and his wife, Aja, announced their split back in September 2022. But filed for divorce in April this year. Aja, a singer for Nico Vega, said that she marked a “pretty big transition in out lives” and that this stage of her life was a tough one.
- Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn. Following six years of dating, Taylor and Joe parted ways. The news came as Taylor is travelling the US for her sold-out Eras tour.
MARCH 2023
- Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth. Sadly, the pair announced the difficult decision to divorce after 11 years of marriage. The Oscar winning actress, and her talent-agent hubby announced the news on social media: 12 days before their 12-year wedding anniversary.
- Brie Larson and Elijah Allan-Blitz. The couple went their separate paths, after sparking dating rumours in July 2019. Brie confirmed the split during an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. She added that she did not “have a partner” and was “just completely open”.

FEBRUARY 2023
- Avril Lavigne and Mod Sun. The couple decided to end their relationship, less than a year after getting engaged. The pop-rock musicians first met in 2021 and even released a single together, Flames.
- Maddie Ziegler and Eddie Benjamin. The Dance Moms star and, Australian singer broke up after more than three years together. Their relationship allegedly started in 2019, but the couple only went public with their romance in March 2020.
- Camila Cabello and Austin Kevitch. The two have gone their seperate ways after 8 months of dating.

JANUARY 2023
- Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott. The split, according to tabloid outlets, was largely due to the couple’s conflicting lifestyles. A source told the media that the Kardashians star is “very focused on her kids and her business”. They pair has two kids together, Stormi and Aire. “Travis is the opposite,” said the source. “He likes to party.”
