Eurovision fans went rushing to get hold of the coveted tickets for this year’s song contest. The lucky few can enjoy the contest through two preview shows. A preview show is a full run-through of the broadcast, doubling up as a production rehearsal.

It is inevitable that many fans will leave Ticketmaster empty-handed as they have to compete with those in the UK grappling for tickets – and those travelling abroad for Eurovision this year.

Those coveted tickets for Eurovision

Three thousand tickets are reserved for Ukrainians living in the UK on three visa programmes: Homes for Ukraine, Ukraine Families Scheme and Ukraine Extension Scheme. The government subsidised the cost, but a £20 charge will apply.

Naturally, there is a high demand to be inside the arena in Liverpool in May. Ticket prices ranged from £90 (R1985,85) to £290 (R6398.84) for the semi finals on May 9 and 11. And tickets for the Eurovision finals range from £160 (R3530.39) to £380 (R8384.68).

Despite the high demand, roughly 6000 people will be at each show, fewer than expected numbers for one of the biggest entertainment shows in the world. Organisers said last year it needed space for R10,000 spectators – which Liverpool’s arena usually does have. This year’s stage set-up and production elements reduced the numbers. Last year’s event saw over 7000 people crammed at each show.

There will be lots of activity in Liverpool outside the arena area. A two-week cultural festival will begin on May 1, including a submarine street parade and an outdoor Eurovision opera concert.

There is a very important deadline next week, in which all 37 competing broadcasters need to confirm the song and artists competing at Eurovision.
