Eskom CEO Andre De Ruyter has reportedly survived a murder attempt at his Megawatt Park office in Sunninghill, Johannesburg, where he drank a cup of coffee laced with cyanide.

According to a report in the publication EE Business Intelligence, headed by well-known energy analyst Chris Yelland, De Ruyter confirmed the attempt on his life, which took place on Tuesday 13 December 2022, a day after he submitted his resignation as CEO to the Eskom chairman, Mpho Makwana.

De Ruyter told the publication he reported the matter to the SAPS on 5 January 2023.

A source told EE Business Intelligence that after drinking a cup of coffee in his office, De Ruyter became weak, dizzy and confused, shaking uncontrollably and vomiting. He subsequently collapsed, unable to walk.

He was rushed to his doctor, with his private security in tow, where his condition was diagnosed as cyanide poisoning.
