The Cape Malay Choirs Road March returns this week after a two-year absence due to Covid-19, while the popular Tweede Nuwe Jaar Minstrel Parade will get the year started on a colourful and joyous note next week.

Cape Malay Choirs Parade

The Cape Malay Choirs Parade will take place from Saturday, 31 December 2022 to Sunday, 1 January 2022.

The event will start from 21:30, at the corner of Grand Parade and Darling Street, and end at the intersection of Rose and Castle Streets in the Bo-Kaap.

The parade, which is expected to attract thousands of spectators, will end in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Residents and motorists are advised that due to the event and the parade procession, a number of roads will be affected from 18:00 on Saturday.

A detailed breakdown of the road closures is available here.

‘We are incredibly excited to see these events return to our festive season calendar; not only for the benefit of the participants, but also the thousands of spectators. Many visitors have come to know that a festive season visit to Cape Town is not complete without witnessing the street parades. For the first time in a number of years, Cape Town will usher in the new year on a traditional note, and we could not be happier,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

Muneeb Gambeno, Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association Director, says that the backing they have received from new title sponsor Hollywoodbets has helped make this possible, along with the support of the City of Cape Town and other sponsors.

“In order to organise an event on this scale, we need many stakeholders to work together to achieve the vision of creating an inclusive event for all the people of Cape Town. We are thrilled that the Klopse are able to take to the streets again in 2023, and look forward to the best version of the event to date,” says Gambeno.
