FSG put Liverpool on the market

Liverpool is on sale and can be yours – if you have a couple of billion pounds laying around.

The announcement from the current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) dropped like a bombshell on Monday, 7 November 2022. A report in The Athletic first confirmed the news.

The Sports publication reported that the US company had approached two major US Banks, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, to handle a potential takeover.

The announcement came moments after the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Round of 16 draws, where the Reds were paired with Spanish giants, Real Madrid. This will be the fourth time in six season that the two European Giants will meet in the UCL.

the Spaniards beat the English outfit in two finals. 3-1 in 2017/18 and 1-0 in 2021/22. In 2020/21 the two met in the Quarter-final stage, where Real Madrid advanced with a 3-1 win over two legs.

A hefty profit for FSG

FSG has been at the helm of Liverpool for over 12 years, with the team’s value inflating twelvefold. The American conglomerate purchased the club in October 2010 from Tom Hicks and George Gillett for £300m. However the business magazine, Forbes suggests that the clubs’ worth now sits at £3.6billion.

FSG rejected an offer from the Middle East to buy Liverpool for £3billion in 2021. Now, the club is in the market for £4billion. This comes after the Todd Boehly-led US Consortium purchased Chelsea for a record £4.25billion in March this year.

Liverpool not taking a back seat

The American conglomerate revealed the news of the potential sale in a statement and also confirmed that they remain committed to the club.

“There have been a number of recent changes of ownership and rumours of changes in ownership at EPL clubs. Inevitably we are asked regularly about Fenway Sports Group’s ownership in Liverpool,” read the statement.

“FSG has said before that under the right terms and conditions, we would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club. We remain fully committed to the success of Liverpool, both on and off the pitch.”
