The personal belongings of the victims are on display at a gym in Seoul. This is to honour the dozens who died at the scene of the Itaewon disaster. Survivors and relatives of the victims have been called to collect their items…but few have shown up.

At least 156 people died during a crowd crush in Itaewon during Halloween celebrations. Most of the victims were young people. They were part of the estimated 100,000 who flocked to celebrate the first post-pandemic Halloween.

A temporary morgue for those killed in the crush has been turned into a giant lost-and-found box.

The items are being kept at the Wonhyoro Sports Centre. At least 800 items are laid out on tables and the floor – including 256 pairs of shoes, 258 pieces of clothing, 124 bags and 156 electronic items, reports The Guardian.

Coats and jackets are laid out – waiting for someone to claim them. Many items are muddy, suggesting they had been dropped under the crush. Halloween masks and wigs were also retrieved by police.

Thousands gathered at the weekend to attend a candlelight vigil in central Seoul. The vigil was organised by a civic group linked to the country’s opposition party. Many attendees held signs with – ‘Step down, Yoon Suk-yeol’ – printed on them.

Opposition politicians have taken the incident as a chance to accuse running President, Yoon Suk-yeol, of not taking responsibility for the disaster.

A sea of white floral tributes and letters flooded a subway exit near the incident. Mourners have also left chocolates, soju, beer and strawberry milk.

South Korea’s President, Yoon Suk-yeol, has apologised for the incident. He has since promised to bring officials to book.

“I do not dare to compare myself to the parents who lost their sons and daughters, but as the president who ought to protect the people’s lives and safety, I am heartbroken,” he said.

The country’s police are facing harsh public criticism following their response to the tragedy. Reports show that just 137 officers were dispatched to the area where an estimated 100,000 gathered.

Last week, transcripts showed several emergency calls made in the hours leading up to the incidents. This shows that people were warning of a potential crush, begging intervention.
