Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain has defended its crown as “Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction” at the prestigious World Travel Awards. It’s the fourth year in a row that Table Mountain has bagged the title.
“The World Travel Awards is the gold standard in the travel world and acknowledges service excellence and responsible operators each year,” says Wahida Parker, Managing Director for the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC).
“We are beyond excited at the news that we retained our title. We faced some very worthy competitors especially from our hometown heroes such as Robben Island and the V&A Waterfront. Most of the nominees in our category were from Cape Town, which shows again what a wonderful and successful mix of attractions we have in the Mother City,” says Parker.
The World Travel Awards, she adds, play an important role for international and local tourism efforts. “It promotes and celebrates industry members who have shown resilience and commitment during very tough economic times and who have overcome the challenges that they have faced. Thank you to everyone who voted for us.”
Table Mountain has meanwhile been nominated in the next stage of the annual World Travel Awards categories, where the focus shifted from regional to global contests.
Table Mountain and the Cableway have been nominated in two categories, she says.
“The World’s Leading Cable Car Ride category pits TMACC against other cable car operators from around the world. The competition in the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction, meanwhile, is particularly fierce where Table Mountain has been nominated along with a long list that includes the likes of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the USA’s Grand Canyon National Park, the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu in Peru, and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.”
Voting is via an online platform and is open to members of the public as well as tourism and travel operators.
Votes cast by members of the industry are allocated double the weight of public votes. Voting closes on 20 October 2022.
