The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure has released four pieces of land for the resettlement of flood-affected residents in the eThekwini Metro.

Minister Patricia de Lille says the land will be used to erect houses for residents whose homes were damaged or washed away in the floods in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province earlier this year.

De Lille says the land has been signed over to the Housing Development Agency which will now manage and facilitate the development and servicing of the land.

De Lille also says repairs to government-owned buildings damaged in the floods are at an advanced stage.

The Minister recently paid the province a visit and says that repairs to the buildings and facilities are almost 100% completed.

She says bridges, damaged by flooding rivers, are also close to being fully repaired and reopened.

The four parcels of land are located in the eThekwini Metro and another land parcel will be released within the next two weeks.

The five properties are located in the sub-regions of the eThekwini metro with access roads to the properties in good condition.

De Lille says the land will be transferred only to be used for the accommodation of households affected by the floods earlier this year and for human settlement development purposes.

The Minister will visit the province again later this year to hand over completed bridges to communities.
