Jamaica Clinches Netball Series, but SPAR Proteas Show Promise

Published on

The SPAR Proteas fought valiantly but fell 59-47 to the Sunshine Girls of Jamaica in the second match of the Margaret Beckford Sunshine Netball Series on Wednesday.

The result secures Jamaica, ranked third globally, an unassailable lead in the three-Test series against fifth-ranked South Africa.

For a brief period in the opening quarter, South Africa took a narrow two-goal lead, showing early promise. However, Jamaica, energized by the presence of sprinting legend Asafa Powell at the National Indoor Stadium, surged ahead to take the quarter 18-13.

In the second quarter, the SPAR Proteas displayed determination, maintaining discipline despite Jamaica’s relentless pace and precision in the circle.

Yet, communication breakdowns among the South African players proved costly as Jamaica extended their advantage, heading into halftime with a 34-26 lead.

Jamaica’s dominance continued in the third quarter, where they built a commanding 15-goal lead at one point – the widest margin of the series thus far.

Debutante Sanmarie Visser and goalkeeper Ane Retief worked tirelessly to thwart the Jamaican shooters, but the Sunshine Girls’ speed and effective high-ball strategy proved too much. Jamaica claimed the quarter 50-36.

In the final quarter, Jamaica made several substitutions, giving South Africa an opportunity to shine. The Proteas capitalized, winning the quarter 12-9, but the overall score of 59-47 underscored Jamaica’s clinical performance.

Despite the loss, South Africa’s goal attack Kamogelo Maseka and captain Khanyisa Chawane stood out with impressive performances. However, unforced errors by the youthful and inexperienced side hindered their chances of mounting a comeback.

Post-Match Reflections

SPAR Proteas coach Jenny van Dyk expressed mixed emotions after the match.

“What a great performance by the Sunshine Girls. They were just so clinical, not leaving anything to chance,” she said. “There are so many lessons to take from this game, and I’m pleased we won the final quarter.”

Assistant coach Zanele Mdodana highlighted the team’s improvement since the first Test on Saturday.

“I thought they were energized and switched on,” Mdodana said. “Playing against top teams is the best way to grow. We need to learn how to withstand pressure, both physically and mentally.”

Baby Proteas Shine

In a bright spot for South African netball, the SPAR Baby Proteas secured an emphatic 49-32 victory over Jamaica’s Under-21 team earlier in the day, signalling hope for the future.

Series Finale

The third and final Test of the series takes place on Saturday, 25 January, at 6:00 PM Jamaican time. South African fans can catch the action live on SuperSport Variety 4 (DSTV channel 209).
