UPDATE: The former Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe has died. Japan’s national broadcaster says the 67-year-old Abe was shot while giving a campaign speech. The suspected attacker, reported to be a man in his 40s, was tackled at the scene and arrested.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida says the shooting of his predecessor and mentor Shinzo Abe is unforgivable. Kishida was speaking to reporters at his official residence in Tokyo after rushing back to the capital following the shooting. He says the former PM is in a “very grave condition” in hospital. Meanwhile: Local media are reporting that a 41-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting. Tetsuya Yamagami is a former member of Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force, the country’s equivalent of a navy.
