[LISTEN} The Best Petrol Station Food of All Time

Published on

With the fuel price on the brink of a record price increase it’ll be quite daunting to head to your favourite petrol station this week. But maybe the silver lining is that you get to enjoy your favourite pie, donut, or snack. In South Africa there’s undoubtedly a fond enjoyment of ‘garage cuisine’ at service station restaurants, padstal takeaways, and even your local petrol station down the road. Smile Breakfast got talking about their favourites and it turns out Capetonians have a number of unique, and tasty places to enjoy the best petrol station food.

From all over the city, province, and surrounds, there seem to be so many garages and pitstops that you remember simply for the food. Here are some of the suggestions we got:

“If you drive to Hermanus you HAVE to stop at the Onrus Engen on the way. The best cheese griller in town”. Lucy in Claremont told us about this South African twist on a Turkish delight. Apparently they make for a great roadtrip snack.

“Buffeljagsrivier has the best roosterbrood you can ever have.” You’ll find Roosterkoek Records at a petrol station bistro called Oude Post on the N2 in Buffeljagsrivier.

“”The hotdogs at my local BP in Edgemead are so good it sommer becomes dinner for the family”. Or as Bobby said “the simple yet classic horrog”.

Someone also let us know about Bergzicht Motors at a Caltex in Stellenbsoch that has some of the best, freshly baked bread they’ve ever tasted.

Apparently a BP in Somerset West makes some of the greatest filled croissants and mac ‘n cheese

There is nothing like a good milkshake and apparently an N2 padstal outside Gqeberha has the best lime milkshakes in the country. Worth the trip perhaps?

Not to be outdone by any other petrol station, apparently there is a garage on Old Paarl Road that serves tasty breyani and Sunday roast. Because we all know that’s exactly what we’ll need to comfort ourselves from the shock of filling up our tanks.
