“Mix and Match” booster vaccines now allowed, with shorter interval between Pfizer doses

Published on

From today, people 18 years and older, who have received the 1 dose J&J (Janssen) vaccine, can choose to have a Pfizer (Comirnaty) booster.

The Director-General of the Department of Health Sandile Buthelezi last night issues a formal circular announcing the move to “mix and match” boosters.

This also applies to those who have received two doses of Pfizer, who can now choose a J&J booster.

In addition, he announced a change in the schedule for the Pfizer vaccine.

Instead of waiting 42 days for a second dose, that can now be administered after 21 days has passed.

And the third booster dose of Comirnaty can now be given 90 days after the second, instead of the previous 180.
