Highlights from Premier Alan Winde’s State of the Province Address in Velddrif

Premier Alan Winde delivered the annual State of the Province Address (SOPA) in Velddrif today, marking the Official Opening of Parliament.

He says as the province normalises its response to COVID-19, focus will be placed on the second pandemic of joblessness and improving safety and dignity for all citizens.

Some of the major announcements in the SOPA include:

  • A new Department of Infrastructure to be created in the Western Cape.
  • A first for South Africa: Violence Prevention Unit to be established in Western Cape Department of Health.
  • Premier to take responsibility for coordinating response to joblessness pandemic through extended jobs cabinet.
  • Five mega health infrastructure projects over the medium-to-long term.
  • R3 billion has been allocated to improve the Western Cape’s road infrastructure.
  • Cabinet has now adopted the GBV implementation plan.
